Earlier this month, Gov. J.B. Pritzker required state employees who work in congregate settings, such as prisons and veterans’ homes, to be vaccinated by Oct. 4. The state’s largest employee’s union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, has encouraged vaccination but opposes a vaccine mandate.
Nearly 80% of Northwestern physicians and staff are already vaccinated, but the system decided to put the new requirements in place “given the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant and its risk to those with underlying medical conditions and children under 12 who are not yet eligible to receive a vaccine,” spokesman Christopher King said in a statement.
Police said a 50-year-old manwas on a CTA Red Line train in the 1200 block of North Clark Street shortly before 5:15 a.m., when another male passenger approached him and hit him with a hammer, giving him a “laceration to the forehead.” He was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
By afternoon, conditions in the city are expected to be hot and “uncomfortably humid,” according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office. Two of the boaters were found without life vests, clinging to their capsized sailboats. Due to the stormy lakefront conditions, the department upgraded search and rescue efforts to include water rescue personnel, the U.S. Coast Guard, Evanston lifeguards, Wilmette Sail Club and Evanston city staff.
“Our tentative plan is to follow the mask mandate by early September, because with the IHSA rule, our athletes might be put in jeopardy,” said Steve Lucie, a former longtime school board member with District 316, and a fifth generation farmer in the rural district along the Mississippi River, about 290 miles from Chicago.
The Amtrak police officer and two other men had minor injuries, and were not shot, Langford said. One was taken to the University of Illinois Hospital and two were taken to Rush University Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized, according to the Fire Department.
Chicago police officers work the scene where two officers were shot and the man who allegedly shot them was also wounded in the 1500 block of South Lawndale Avenue on May 16, 2021, in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago. The police officers were responding to a “shots fired” alert from ShotSpotter, the city’s gunshot detection system. (Erin Hooley / Chicago Tribune)
