“This is a violence prevention, crime prevention (and) public safety initiative,” Cliff Nellis, LCLC executive director, said. “For decades we have spent billions policing, prosecuting, and incarcerating primarily Black and Latino communities in Chicago. This has led to the doling out of massive numbers of permanent, debilitating criminal records, lengthy prison sentences, and exacerbated the cycle of poverty, cycle of violence, and racial inequity in our city.”
Most recently, the city’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection department issued 10 citations for failing to follow the masking requirements from last Thursday to Sunday, according to a Tuesday news release. Meteorologists Tuesday were warning of the possibility of thunderstorms in Chicago beginning around noon, which could also produce choppy waves on Lake Michigan, half dollar-sized “damaging hail” and winds as strong as 40 mph — hefty enough to down tree limbs or power lines, according to the National Weather Service.
At least 11 children and teenagers were among those shot, including 4-year-old Mychal “MJ” Moultry Jr., who was shot Friday evening when bullets pierced the windows of a Woodlawn apartment where he had been getting his hair braided. Moultry, who was pronounced dead Sunday, was visiting Chicago from his home in Decatur, Alabama.
