Among the hundreds in the crowd preparing for the two-mile stroll along Lake Michigan was the family of the late Eric Queyquep, who died of ALS in 2012 at the age of 46. His wife, Ninfa Queyquep, said she has brought her sizable team to the Walk for Life event every year since 2010. When COVID-19 interrupted the annual tradition last year, her family did the walk on their own in their hometown of Bensenville, Illinois.
Shortly after 3 a.m., the man walked into the 19th District police station in the 800 block of West Addison Street with a deep laceration to the chest. The victim told police he was in physical altercation with another male. The male was located shortly after and placed into custody, police said.
Witnesses told police someone fired shots from a red vehicle and fled the scene. A 34-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, 29, suffered a wound to the eye and arm, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Roosevelt Road, Michigan Avenue, Ida B. Wells Drive, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and Columbus Drive were affected by the closures Friday night and possibly will be through the weekend, Rich Guidice, executive director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, said in a news conference Friday evening at Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue in the South Loop.
“Vandalism is acting out in a malicious way, and it’s an act of aggression that is communicating a message against property, but ultimately, it is aimed at people, and at an institution, in this case, their school,” said Arthur Lurigio, a professor of psychology and criminal justice at Loyola University Chicago.
