Gary Police Chief Brian Evans, at a Monday afternoon news conference at Gary Police Headquarters, said the officer, identified as Sgt. William Fazekas, 54, was patrolling the area of 4th Avenue and Lincoln Street around 12:57 p.m. when he saw a vehicle hit another vehicle. As Fazekas approached the scene to offer assistance, a person in the car that hit the other vehicle shot at and hit him in the left shoulder, Evans said.
