Of the six new casinos authorized in the 2019 law, only one has opened for business. State Rep. Bob Rita, a Democrat from south suburban Blue Island who sponsored the 2019 gambling legislation that created the new casino licenses, said that while it’s taken longer than some had hoped to get to this point, he’s pleased that communities that have been seeking these development projects for decades are finally getting them.

Under the state legislation creating a casino license for the south suburbs, the host community will keep 2% of adjusted gross receipts, or money wagered after winning bets are paid, while 3% will be divvied up among another 42 towns. In the example of the Homewood/East Hazel Crest site, they would share the 2% take.

“Bringing natural gas to the village of Hopkins Park is a longtime, organic initiative driven by the residents of the community and supported by numerous advocates,” Nicor spokesperson Jennifer Golz said, adding: “Without this fuel choice, residents are forced to use propane, wood burning and other dangerous heating methods that pose health risks and fire hazards.”
At least half of 118 new licenses issued for craft growers, infusers and transporters have gone to companies majority-owned by nonwhite applicants, in contrast to the previous all-white ownership, said Danielle Perry, the state’s cannabis regulation oversight officer. Forty-three percent of the Department of Agriculture licensees are black-owned, 10% by Latinos, 9% by coalitions of people of color and 4% by Asians, she said.
“Agreements can take a lot of forms, and the Potawatomi do not get to dictate that we were required to come up with some particular form of agreement, some detailed development agreements, some detailed real estate acquisition agreements, a host of other agreements that would go into actually building out a casino,” Davis said.
