A man already facing drug charges in Cook and DuPage counties has now been charged in the December drug overdose death of a Lake Barrington man, authorities said Monday.
The Lake County sheriff’s office said Luke Napolitano, 20, of the 400 block of West Russell Street, Barrington, was indicted by a statewide grand jury in a drug-induced homicide.
Napolitano, police said, sold fentanyl to a Lake Barrington man who died of an overdose on Dec. 1.
The 20-year-old man was found dead at his home in the 25600 block of North Countryside Drive. Police said their investigation revealed that the overdose victim and Napolitano had been in communication the day before the man died, and that Napolitano sold the victim drugs.
Because Napolitano is alleged to have sold drugs in several jurisdictions, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office presented his case to a statewide grand jury, police said. The jury indicted him June 9 in the alleged drug homicide, and for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, authorities said.
Napolitano was being held in Cook County and was going to be transferred to Lake County, police said.
“Fentanyl-laced drugs are incredibly dangerous and continue to wreak havoc in communities across our country,” Illinois Attorney General Raoul said in a statement released Monday. “I am absolutely committed to holding individuals accountable for distributing fentanyl-laced drugs, and I appreciate the hard work of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in investigating this case.”
