Autumn is a good time to spread mulch around trees, shrubs. Here’s how to do it right.

After you spread an even layer of mulch around a tree or shrub, use your hands or a rake to pull the mulch away from the bark. That will make sure the mulch doesn’t trap moisture to encourage disease and decay and it won’t shelter nibbling animals. (Beth Botts/Morton Arboretum)
