“Just make sure I have (the intent) the same every single pitch,” he said, “not just saying, ‘Hey, throw this one over,’ or, ‘Hey, I really just need a strike here.’ No, I’m trying to execute this pitch still, regardless of score or situation, get back to that intense focus in a way, and I think everything else will be cleaned up.”

“Anytime you have that quality of player that shows back up and gets out here in the huddle and just that experience that he brings (it’s good),” Nagy said. “He just has such a quiet calm and confidence to him that you can see the guys out there throwing him the football and the things he’s doing, he just slides on in. The one sneaky thing about A-Rob that I think is pretty cool is No. 1, even if he’s not here, you know he’s working his tail off, and No. 2, he’s always in great shape, and we noticed that today.”

That’s a heavy metaphor to decipher, but if Hahn is the designated juicer, he has a chance to squeeze the life out of the Cleveland Indians, the Sox’s only real pursuer in the American League Central. Acquiring someone such as Miami Marlins outfielder Starling Marte or another available slugger at the trade deadline would be as good a way as any to show Sox fans he means business.

Gun control issues have always been contentious, reflecting divergent views on firearms between the heavily-populated Chicago area, where crime is high, and downstate rural areas where guns are embraced for sport, hunting and protection. In the past, those culture differences crossed party lines, but in recent years downstate has become more heavily Republican and more united in backing gun rights.
