Before becoming mayor, Lightfoot served as head of the Chicago Police Board, the panel that rules on police discipline, and chaired then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Police Accountability Task Force. At the same time, she has been criticized by police reform activists who say she has been too friendly with law enforcement.

That episode and others in Season 2 followed the breakdown in the relationship between Gramenos and Eckhardt, once close friends who purchased, renovated and sold Chicago homes together. Gramenos, the designer and host, and Eckhardt, the former lead contractor, ran into trouble with the city for alleged building violations and were involved in a slew of lawsuits, many of which have been settled or dropped.
“There were certainly some conversations about that, and we had a long conversation about what, from my perspective, I thought we were seeing, not just in Chicago, but really across the U.S.,” Lightfoot said in a Zoom call with reporters to discuss the trip. “They’re in the city of San Francisco. They’re proximate to L.A. They obviously know a lot about New York and other markets they’re in that are experiencing the same kinds of challenges that we are over this last year around public safety.”

“The CDC is right: vaccination is the best preventive strategy. As school board members, parents, teachers and superintendents plan for a return to in-person learning in the fall, we strongly encourage those who are not vaccinated to continue to mask,” Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a statement. “IDPH is proud to fully adopt school guidance issued by CDC, which is based on the latest scientific information about COVID-19.”

“With his history, everything you deal with is extremely serious,” Ross said. “I think (the doctors said) it’s not a great concern, but having to deal with that as a player and being in your mental state, whether it’s a heart palpitation or a flutter, coupled with adrenaline and the nerves and anxiety of being in there for a game… I think we all want to be on the same page of making sure he’s safe.”
