“I don’t know if it was suspected or hoped, that it really wasn’t COVID-related,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said of Vaughn. “It was more because the test showed something and we kind of guessed. I say ‘we’ because it was the training staff. Was it a coincidence that it came after that day in Cleveland with the allergies? The way it turned out, he missed some games, but he’s fine and ready to go today. And that’s a relief.”

About 9:20 p.m., a 43-year-old man was fatally wounded in the West Englewood neighborhood in the 5600 block of South Marshfield Avenue. Police said the man was walking outside when someone inside a four-door white sedan opened fire, hitting him in the head. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 2016 Cubs will always have a special bond, and almost every time one of them comes back to Wrigley Field with a different team they’re treated like royalty. There are only seven players from that team currently on the Cubs: Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Báez, Jason Heyward, Willson Contreras, Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrieta.

“It was an incredible experience,” Sheets said Friday during a conference call. “The guys here were fantastic, each and every one of them came up to me, gave me a congratulations, told me hello. And walking into the coaches office and seeing (manager) Tony (La Russa) there and all the other coaches there with a smile on their face as well, it was an incredible moment and one I’ll never forget.

Soon after, Fields was making the rounds on TV. He appeared on “Good Morning America” and stressed that his push wasn’t accompanied by a cavalier disregard for the dangers of the pandemic. In fact, he argued, many Buckeyes players felt safer when immersed in their sport, protected by the strict safety protocols and guidelines within team facilities and with regular testing procedures in place.
