After his playing career ended, Brennan was drafted by the NFL but instead chose to coach at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago while earning a law degree from DePaul. After leading Mount Carmel to city championships in 1951, 1952 and 1953, Brennan was hired to coach the freshman team at Notre Dame.
“It’s the first time in my career being in that position to play spoiler,” Heyward said. “It’s a lot of fun playing good baseball, of course, but having some incentive to do it and go out there together, it’s really nice to see some results.”
