“To succeed we must have a Democrat, a nominee, who appeals to the people who vote Democratic — mainly women, and precisely, African Americans,” Dowell said. “Let’s be practical. The path to victory is not paved with gold. Money can buy endorsements and influence, but it cannot buy votes.”
“Even if it is true that everyone is eventually going to get, particularly, the omicron variant, it is not a good idea to intentionally try to get it sooner or to completely abandon the preventive measures that we’ve been taking,” said Diane Lauderdale, an epidemiologist and the chair of public health sciences at the University of Chicago.
Both sides would increase the minimum salary, players from $570,500 to $775,000 this season and management to a series of tiers: $600,000 for players with less than a year of big league service, $650,000 for at least one but less than two and $700,000 for at least two.

Other citywide data show Chicago is averaging 4,793 daily cases and a 18.9% positivity rate, both down from the previous week. But the caseload remains at the highest levels since the start of the pandemic. Hospitalizations and deaths are up at 187 and 17, respectively, which Arwady attributed to the latest omicron wave catching up to the health care system.
