“Students have demanded and teachers have demanded for the safety of people in our school communities. We know this has not happened,” Catlyn Savado, 14, a freshman at Percy L. Julian High School on the Far South Side, said via megaphone on school grounds during the walkout. “We know what keeps us safe. Only the community knows what they need to keep the community safe. They increase the police budget, but we don’t have a mental health department at our schools. CTU has been fighting for nurses, social workers and psychologists in every single Chicago public school and even within a pandemic, that isn’t happening. That ain’t right.”
Amid the fallout, Ferguson opened an investigation. Lightfoot also commissioned law firm Jones Day to conduct its own investigation, which last month found that city officials failed to follow appropriate procedures, did not adequately communicate across departments and “did not live up to the public service mission” in their handling of the botched police raid on Young’s home.
Thomas and his lawyers contended the shooting was self-defense. He was afraid for his life, since Nicholas Lile grabbed Thomas by the neck, choked him and took him to the ground punching him, then threatened to kill him. Thomas pulled out a gun, identified himself as a police officer and fired a single shot, according to court records.
Javier Heredia-Rios, of the 300 block of Eastern Avenue in Joliet, was found guilty of four counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide of another Joliet man, according to a news release from the Will County state’s attorney’s office. According to authorities, Heredia-Rios used a hammer to bludgeon Oscar Garrido-Castro, who was 36 at the time of his death.
“You have to be mentally strong to go through that, because you have one big injury and then you come back and then you have another,” he said. “Luckily I’ve never had to go through that, but I imagine having to sit out for what, 2½ years or something, it’s difficult. Mentally it takes a toll.
Tate, 27, was drunk in the bowling alley’s bathroom when a 42-year-old man tried to go into the men’s room, Kathryn Morrissey, a Cook County assistant state’s attorney, said at the virtual hearing at the Markham courthouse. Tate blocked him because Tate’s sister was in the bathroom, Morrissey said.
The 59-page indictment outlined a series of schemes in which Burke allegedly tried to muscle developers into hiring his law firm, Klafter & Burke, to appeal their property taxes. The funding, which comes from the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan President Joe Biden signed into law in November, is just a portion of the roughly $17 billion the state is expected to receive from the overall package. It should provide a boost to a state that has more than 2,300 bridges rated in “poor” condition, according to federal data, the third-largest total among all 50 states.
