In Florida, Webster said, more than 39,000 Floridians died from opioid abuse or related problems between 1999 and 2020. Walgreens, he said, sold about one of every four opioids in the state over a similar time span often under questionable circumstances, such as a shady doctor, fake prescriptions or huge amounts of drugs obviously far in excess of what was necessary for a given patient.

I’m not just telling about people’s suffering, I’m trying to make these beautiful portraits, these environmental portraits that show the interaction of the person in their space. My work, it’s not something you’d put over your sofa. It’s not traditionally beautiful work. That’s why I do the books. This is my seventh book. I do the books because, in a way that an art exhibition at a museum or a gallery is not, it’s permanent. People are still talking about the Holocaust stuff. It’s led to a lot of discourse. And that’s what I want, that makes me very proud of the work and think that it’s successful in that it’s reached a broader audience, not just my audience.

The land previously had been a golf course for William Grunow Sr.’s lakefront estate. The Grunow family converted the land to a chicken farm, and in the 1950s, Grunow’s son, William Grunow Jr., converted the site into a ski hill by moving 600,000 yards of earth, he told the Tribune in 1966, to add 80 feet of vertical drop for an intermediate hill and 100 feet for an expert hill.
