As reported in AfroTech, LeRoi Hicks becomes the first African American physician to hold the title of Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for the American College of Physicians, the largest medical specialty organization in the states.

According to a press release from ACP, Hicks’ selection comes after a national search and recommendations for the organization’s Board of Regents. Hicks, known as a clinical system leader for his research on health equity and healthcare disparities, has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work.

Dr. Hicks graduated from Howard University before receiving his medical degree at Indian University School of Medicine in 1995.  After completing his residency at Mount Auburn Hospital, Dr. Hicks completed a fellowship in general medicine and faculty development at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and earned a Master of Public Health Degree from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2001.

Since 2014, Dr. Hicks has served in a range of roles at ChristianaCare in Delaware, including; Chief Medical Officer of Wilmington Hospital, Campus Executive Director, and currently, president of Wilmington Hospital. Hicks takes on his new role at ACP this July.

In a statement, Hicks shared:

“I am humbled to be selected to lead ACP at a time when internal medicine physicians are navigating profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities in a rapidly evolving health care environment. My experience in executive leadership, patient care, and academic medicine has prepared me to champion ACP’s mission and strategic imperatives. I look forward to working with ACP’s leadership and staff to deliver programs and services that support internal medicine physicians across every stage of their career and advance equitable access to high–quality care for all.”
