NEW ORLEANS — Southern University closed the 2025 season in dramatic fashion, rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to edge longtime rival Grambling State 28-27 in the 52nd Bayou Classic on Nov. 29 at Caesars Superdome.
A crowd of 59,007 watched Southern secure its fourth straight victory over Grambling, giving the Jaguars’ senior class a clean sweep in the rivalry during their college careers.
Interim head coach Fred McNair credited Southern’s ability to stay together through a season that included plenty of change.
“It’s just the resiliency of these guys,” McNair said. “They fought every day. To keep these guys motivated during the changes — it was tough. The coaching staff did a great job. These guys were resilient.”
Barry Remo provided one of the game’s biggest moments and earned Bayou Classic MVP honors. Early in the third quarter, Remo broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run that pulled Southern within 17-14 and shifted momentum back toward the Jaguars.
Remo finished with 107 rushing yards on only seven carries.
Trey Holly also played a major role in Southern’s offense, scoring two touchdowns while rushing for 65 yards on 18 attempts.
The victory added another memorable chapter to one of HBCU football’s most celebrated rivalries while allowing Southern to finish its season on a high note.
The game also marked the final Bayou Classic for Southern University System President Dennis J. Shields. Shields took over at Southern in 2022 after spending 12 years as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Before his time in Wisconsin, Shields held administrative and admissions positions at the University of Iowa College of Law, the University of Michigan Law School and Duke University School of Law.
