Richton Park police said the parent of a 10-year-old girl has been charged with child endangerment after the girl brought a loaded gun to school Wednesday.
Police responded to Neil Armstrong Elementary, 5030 Imperial Drive, at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for a student with a gun, according to a news release.
The girl had been detained by school staff for having a semi-automatic handgun, according to the release.
The parent who was charged works for the Cook County sheriff’s police, but has been de-deputized pending the outcome of an internal investigation, according to sheriff’s police.
The school was placed on lockdown after the firearm was discovered, then the building cleared and classes canceled for the remainder of the day Wednesday, according to the school district.
Richton Park police said the girl was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
