A Gary man faces charges for killing a Chicago man helping a relative deliver a car engine.

George James, 46, of Gary, was charged Oct. 4, 2022, with murder, two counts of intimidation and one misdemeanor. The affidavit was unsealed after he was arrested Wednesday.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Oct. 2 on the 900 block of Williams Street in Gary.

Arlandus Jackson, 37, of Chicago, died at Methodist Hospitals Northlake, according to court records.

A relative told police Jackson went with him to Gary from Chicago to help deliver a car engine to another man. That man was supposed to give it to “George”.

When they arrived, the first man was with “two unknown males”.

The relative said they and “George” argued after he asked them to carry the engine too far to his trailer. “George” said they’d do it, “or else”, according to the affidavit. He came back with a rifle and the other men walked away.

James fired four shots, striking Jackson, who fell over on the truck bed. He ordered the relative to leave “unless he wanted to get shot, too”.

The relative called the first man to ask where the nearest hospital was. The man met them “nearby” and guided them to Methodist.

Jackson’s death was one of four Gary shootings within 24 hours.
