Political campaigns are more than TV ads, endorsement press conferences and debates.
Since Feb. 28, the Chicago Tribune has sent reporters and photographers around the city to follow mayoral candidates Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson as they’ve pressed their case to voters.
We’ve watched them campaign in churches, community centers, train stations, art galleries and restaurants, from the Far South Side to Austin and Edgewater. Along the way, the contenders have tried to lay out an optimistic vision for the city’s future while taking questions from skeptical voters — and bad-mouthing their opponents. Here are two stories from the campaign trail showing the arguments they’ve made and the personal side they’ve shared with city residents ahead of Tuesday’s election.
