The son-in-law of a couple stabbed in their home Dec. 1 in unincorporated Will County near Crete was due in court Wednesday on charges of attempted murder, as the sheriff’s office described the bloody attack and fight.
Michael Y. Liu, 36, of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was taken to the Will County jail Tuesday after his release from the hospital on charges of attempted murder, home invasion, aggravated discharge of a firearm, residential burglary, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery and trespassing, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s police said Liu entered the home and attacked the couple, stabbing the 66-year-old woman several times and then stabbing her 68-year-old husband as he attempted to intervene and eventually wrestle Liu to the ground and take the knife. The man then stabbed Liu an estimated 17 times in self-defense, according to the sheriff’s office.
All three were taken to an area hospital and then to a Chicago area hospital. The 66-year-old woman was released from the hospital Friday but her husband is still recovering from his injuries in a Chicago area hospital, police said.

“If it were not for the quick action taken by the deputies on scene, three lives may have been lost that day,” Sheriff Mike Kelley said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office responded to the home in the 2600 block of Shady Grove Court at 6:41 p.m. Dec. 1 and found all three people cut and stabbed inside the house.
Michael Liu was scheduled to turn himself into custody at the Waukesha County Huber Detention Facility Dec. 4 for a domestic battery conviction from July 2022 and a violation of an order of protection complaint, according to the sheriff’s office. Instead, police say Liu traveled from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, parked down the street from the couple’s residence near Crete and fired several shots in the direction of the couple as they sat in their living room, missing each time.
Liu then broke into the residence by smashing a sliding-glass door and again fired his weapon until the malfunctioned, according to the sheriff’s office.
A news release from the sheriff’s office says detectives spoke with Liu several times over the weekend and states he made several incriminating statements.
“My heart goes out to the victims in this senseless heinous attack,” Kelley is quoted in the news release.
