A 7-year-old boy died overnight after he was shot while inside his home in Humboldt Park Wednesday, Chicago police said.

The boy was identified as Akeem Briscoe, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Officers responded to the home on the 2600 block of West Potomac Avenue around 8:22 p.m. and found Briscoe inside with a gunshot wound to the stomach, police said. A family member of the boy told officers the boy was in the bathroom at the time when a bullet came through the window and hit him.

Briscoe was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and he was later pronounced.

“The 7 yr. old boy did not survive his injuries from this tragic incident,” Chicago police spokesperson Tom Ahern said in a Twitter post about the fatal shooting. “Our deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones.”

Ahern said multiple shots were fired from outside the home.

No one is in custody as of early Thursday, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
