One of the Chicago-area’s biggest-name health systems, Rush University System for Health, is promoting Dr. Omar Lateef to the role of president and CEO, and the current head of the system will be his senior advisor.

Now, Lateef is president and CEO of Rush University Medical Center, and he will continue in that role as well as his new one, Rush said in a news release Wednesday. The system includes Rush University Medical Center, Rush University, Rush Oak Park Hospital and Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

A Rush spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about why the current leader, Dr. Ranga Krishnan is moving to the role of senior advisor. But according to the news release, the changes are part of “a thoughtfully planned and anticipated progression in leadership.”

Krishnan became CEO of Rush in 2019. Before then, he was the dean of Rush Medical College from October 2015 to May 2019.

Krishnan said in the news release, “It has been a great honor to be a part of the RUSH community these last seven years.” Rush board chairwoman Susan Crown said in the release, “We are deeply grateful to Dr. Krishnan for his strong foundational contributions over the last three years as RUSH CEO.”

Lateef began at Rush University Medical Center in 2005 with a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine, and he then served as chief medical officer before becoming CEO of the hospital.

The leadership changes are effective July 1.
