After beginning this season with zero spectators allowed at Capital One Arena, the Wizards have steadily increased capacity to the point where Monday’s game — Game 4 against the 76ers in their first-round series — had an announced attendance of more than 10,000.
“He threw me a first-pitch breaking ball up for a ball, and I was just sitting dead red heater because I didn’t think he was locating that off-speed all that well,” Eaton said. “I got a pitch in the middle of the barrel, and like I said, it just thrills me to be able to help the team win.”
“You really have to step forward and make an effort, just as in anything, and say, ‘I need help with A, B, C and D,’ and talk to someone. I think that’s so important to have a sounding board, whether it’s someone at the WTA, or someone in your life, or maybe it’s someone you talk to on a weekly basis.
“That (1983) staff really came together, especially in the second half of the season,” La Russa recalled last week. “It’s a different-looking staff. That staff was really young: Hoyt, Dotson, Burns. Here you have three established veterans that are really, really helpful. They’re great mentors and leaders. Then you’ve got the two young starters that are there now (Giolito and Cease) and Kopech, who can feed off that. And then you’ve got the young relievers and a veteran like Liam (Hendriks).
“The way it’s turned out, the experience they’ve had (in the bullpen), I don’t hesitate. It’s just who’s available that day,” La Russa said before Monday’s doubleheader. “José Ruiz has done really well. I don’t know anybody that (I) would hesitate to put in a one-run game with the lead in the last third. It really comes down to availability.”
Tennis players are required to attend news conferences if requested to do so. The maximum fine of $20,000, of course, is not a big deal to Osaka, the world’s highest-earning female athlete thanks to endorsement contracts totaling tens of millions of dollars.
Stewart signed a free-agent deal with the Cubs in the offseason. He’s appeared in 17 big-league games, including six starts, all with the Minnesota Twins from 2018-19. Stewart became the choice to start Monday because he is adequately stretched out and should help avoid taxing the bullpen. He’s pitched at least five innings in each of his four starts with Iowa this season.
“People feel very entitled out here,” said Irving, who played for the Celtics from 2017 to 2019 and said last week he experienced racism during his time in the city. “As a Black man playing in the NBA, dealing with a lot of this stuff, it’s fairly difficult. You never know what’s going to happen. It’s just unacceptable for that stuff to be happening. But we move on.”
The schedule in June is much more unrelenting. In addition to this 17-game stretch, they also face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have the third-best record in the NL, and the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers, teams also fighting for playoff positioning.
Young, a 24-year-old New Yorker who played at Wake Forest, was coming off a two-shot victory last week in Kansas City, Mo. He opened both tournaments with a 64 and has held at least a share of the lead after the last eight rounds — seven of them outright.
