“You guys are going to ask questions every single day, rightfully so, because there are going to be rumors flying and stories written,” Anthony Rizzo said during a July 2 teleconference in Cincinnati. “But it’s on all of us in the clubhouse to just stay connected, stay together, take it day by day, every cliché in baseball, for these next 30 days.”
T-Mobile Arena was packed with a sellout UFC crowd for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began, and President Dana White said the gate revenue was around $16.5 million, ranking among the highest in UFC history. The celebrity crowd included Dave Chappelle, Mel Gibson, Miles Teller, Jared Leto, Steve Aoki, Jackass’ Steve-O, Baker Mayfield and NFL owners Robert Kraft and Mark Davis.
Stefanie Dolson scored a season-high 20 points and Candace Parker had 17 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks for the Sky (10-10), who lost for the third time in four games. Allie Quigley was 4 of 8 from 3-point range and finished with 16 points and Vandersloot added 13 points and 15 assists.
Things have gotten so bad at Wrigley Field that the biggest cheer of the night came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina misjudged a foul pop-up for an error. It didn’t matter, of course, and Molina got the biggest laugh when he was tagged out at second by Javier Báez on a force play in the seventh, then pretended to avoid the tag in Javy-esque fashion, inducing a smile from the Cubs shortstop and fans who appreciated the levity.
If there was any expectation of invincibility for the Americans heading into the Tokyo Olympics, it’s already gone after Nigeria shocked the U.S. on Saturday night. Nigeria beat the U.S. 90-87, pulling off an international shocker with a roster primarily filled of little-known NBA players that found a way to defeat a group of All-NBA, All-Star and max-contract performers.
“We come out and play our game, it doesn’t matter who’s across the line from us,” Goodwin said. “We don’t play down to our competition, we don’t have to play up to our competition. We feel like we’re the best team every time we step between the lines, and that’s how we approach the game. We come to win and we come to play hard.”
Of course, Zaila could bring her talents to both Ogden Honors College and the Tigers’ women’s basketball program, which is hoping for improvement after missing the past two NCAA tournaments. The Tigers hired coach Kim Mulkey, a three-time national champion at Baylor, this summer.
Unfortunately for baseball fans, Guerrero plays for the Blue Jays, who relocated from Toronto to Dunedin, Fla., and Buffalo, N.Y., during the pandemic, playing home games in two minor-league ballparks. The Jays aren’t in a market ESPN cares about, so they rarely if ever are on “Sunday Night Baseball.” So try to catch Guerrero early in the All-Star Game before he disappears from view again.
“To be myself, always kept it 100, kept it real, I never switched, I always stayed me throughout it all,” Anderson said. “Just go out and work every day, bring what I got to the ballpark day in and day out. Couldn’t be in a better place right now.”
