Hermosillo’s season has been a contrast of consistency on the field for Iowa — from his mindset, approach, the work he put in and production — and inconsistency with injuries. He broke his right hand in late March when a car pulled out in front of him as he left the Cubs complex in Mesa, Ariz., sidelining him until the beginning of June. Then, when he appeared to be on the cusp of a call-up, Hermosillo strained his right hamstring and went on the Triple-A injured list July 23, causing him to miss 17 days.
The incident comes 31 years after Morris, during his playing days, told a young female reporter that he “only talks to women when I’m naked if they are on top of me or I’m on top of them.” Morris, who was not naked at the time, was defended by then-team President Bo Schembechler, who blamed the Detroit Free Press for sending a female reporter into the clubhouse.
“We want you to know we have complied 100% with the NCAA, been very collaborative in our approach with them in terms of all of their investigation,” Alberts said. “We will continue to do whatever the NCAA has asked us to do. Our coaches, including coach Frost, have done a great job and have been very accessible in working with the NCAA as we’ve worked through these allegations.”
“He was pissed off at some of the throws,” Nagy said. “I didn’t think offensively we had a very good day. We were able to watch the film last night, go through it and correct it and see why, so, for us, we’ve got to be smart. It doesn’t makes sense right now to push the limits with him and make it (groin) more sore.”
The Bears created a clear path to the starting lineup at left tackle for Jenkins, who primarily played right tackle at Oklahoma State. Veteran Charles Leno, who made 93 consecutive regular-season starts at left tackle, was cut days after Jenkins was drafted, and the only competition on the roster was Elijah Wilkinson, who had experience with the Denver Broncos at right tackle.
On Tuesday, the Romines became the first brothers to be in the same starting lineup for the Cubs in 127 years, the last occurrence coming on May 8, 1894, with Kid and Lew Camp. This after they became the first brother battery in the majors since Larry and Norm Sherry for the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 28, 1962, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
“Do we have talent? Yes, we have a lot of talent. Do we have a lot of good players? Yes, I believe we have a lot of good football players,” Allen said. “And I love our coaching staff. But how well this 2021 team meshes together, the chemistry we create, how hard we play for each other, with each other, how well we perform each and every day, the thing is to me you’ve got to get better every week. If those things all happen as they are, I’m excited about what this team can become.”
The Bears have probably not put Whitehair in the best position to this point in his career by routinely changing his position. While he did play some left tackle at Kansas State, let’s remember that his college career ended in 2015. That was a long time ago, and when he entered the draft, most scouts figured he would be best at guard in the NFL. I am sure Whitehair could get the Bears through a game at left tackle if needed and even start there in a pinch, but it would not be the ideal position for him. Given offensive line coach Juan Castillo’s history with Peters, I would expect the team to get him up to speed quickly as the new starting left tackle. If the Bears were considering a plan to move Whitehair, it would have made more sense to sign a veteran guard. The Bears feel pretty good about their lineup from guard to guard on the offensive line, and shaking that up at this point — even if it was to solve a weakness the team should have done more to shore up in the offseason — doesn’t make a lot of sense. They’re best off keeping Whitehair where he is.
