Gomes predominantly has been in a platoon or backup role for most of his 10-year career, though he was an All-Star in 2018 with Cleveland. His addition doesn’t automatically mean the Cubs will trade Contreras, who is entering his final season before free agency, though it certainly is solid insurance.

With the current state of the roster, the Mets could also play their new pickup Eduardo Escobar at second base, keep J.D. Davis at third base and shove McNeil into an outfield/utility role, but that stands as a sort of worst-case scenario for a team that clearly has visions of grandeur dancing in their eyes. After collecting Escobar, Starling Marte, Mark Canha and Max Scherzer within days of each other, the Mets are making a concerted effort at legitimacy. From the outside, it looks great. But they are still the Mets, who are no stranger to having their best-laid plans go horribly awry.

“I feel like it’s got to be tough, but for him to come in and still lead us and not show any signs of weakness or letting that affect him, that says a lot about him and his character,” Jackson said. “And for us, for him to be our leader, (it’s) just to fall behind what he’s doing. I feel like it’s tough, but he’s handled this situation very well.”

“There are always going to be detractors,” he said. “I don’t really focus too much on that. I’m a very positive guy. Maybe that’s from being Caribbean. We just have a positive attitude about ourselves. … Anyone who has seen me play, seen me work, worked with me, knows that I am ready.”

Cockburn, a preseason All-American and player of the year candidate, leads the nation in scoring at 26.6 points per game. He did not take a shot in the first 12 minutes but finished the first half with 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting. For the game, he was 11 of 16 from the field and made 6 of 9 free throws.

“Even when I struggled offensively and I couldn’t find my way, (my teammates) were still finding me, they were still looking for me,” Vučević said. “I just had to find my rhythm. … We’re trying to establish something, and when you feel like you’re not helping as much as you should, it bothers you and annoys you. So that was the main thing for me. I was just hoping to get out of that so I can help the team more.”
