After the crash, a group of people approached the vehicle, and “you basically had a swarm of people attack the car and were beating and pulling on the two victims … punching them, trying to pull them out of the car,” Brendan Deenihan, who oversees the detective division for Chicago police has said.

The 16-year-old, shot in the shoulder, was initially identified as a victim by a bystander of the North Austin shooting, along with a 42-year-old man who was shot in the leg. But after investigating, detectives determined that he was one of the people who shot the older man, said Karie James, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

Bryant, a museum curator at the National Museum of African American History & Culture, also chaired a similar review commission in Baltimore, which voted to remove a handful of Confederate statues. All of Baltimore’s Confederate monuments were removed following the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to Bryant.

Those who qualified for Thursday’s lottery for 55 licenses came from a pool of 937 unique applicants who submitted more than 4,500 applications, Hutchinson said. They qualified by earning at least 85% of the maximum score — rather than having to have a perfect score, as occurred in the initial scoring round last year.

Kubistal was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana, disobeying a stop sign, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, state police said. He was also later charged with four counts of felony aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, Kendall County court records show.

Sherry Phillips, 61, who has lived in Englewood all her life and has known Dawson for almost all of his, says that the deliveries help her partly because health issues make it difficult for her to go outside or carry things. For Phillips, the best thing about the food Dawson delivers is that it’s fresh and saves her money. At the Whole Foods near her, “the price is crazy.” Englewood’s median income is $22,127, making the prices of Whole Foods, one of the two main grocery stores in the area, inaccessible. According to a community survey run in 2019 by the Inner-City Muslim Action Network, the organization spreadheading Go Green on Racine, fewer than 20% of Englewood’s community shops at Whole Foods.
