There are usually only one to three deaths from rabies every year in the U.S., health officials said, though exposure is common and about 60,000 people annually receive the post-exposure vaccination series. The rabies virus attacks the central nervous system and brain, and is typically fatal without treatment.

Lathem’s defense, however, told jurors Monday that Warren was the only killer, characterizing him in opening statements Monday as a gold-digger and catfisher who killed Cornell in a jealous frenzy after initiating an online romance with Lathem. Warren acted alone, but framed Lathem in his statements to police and prosecutors, they said, and promised that the physical evidence will contradict what Warren told authorities.

“I believe this requirement is necessary and, therefore am deeply troubled by the school’s decision which calls into question its adherence to the doctrines of the Catholic faith,” he said in the statement. “In turn, I want to let everyone know that I am taking this matter to prayer and discerning how to proceed.”

In an unrelated shooting later the same day, a 48-year-old man from Dolton was traveling east on the Eisenhower Expressway, west of Kostner Avenue, when he was shot at from an unknown vehicle around 10:20 p.m. His vehicle sustained damage, but he wasn’t hurt.

“The truth is, anytime you do a big project, there’s always going to be some people who say, ‘Well, look, we don’t want change. We’re worried about it; we don’t know how it’s going to turn out,’” Obama said. “Which is why we’ve gone through such an exhaustive process to encourage and elicit comments and concerns.”

The woman who died, 25, was sitting in a car with another woman in the 6500 block of South Calumet Avenue when both were shot shortly before 1:30 a.m., police said. The 27-year-old was shot in the head and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m., according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She had not been identified Tuesday morning.

“This is an isolated incident, we have a great community and don’t see anything like this. The mayor was just really shook by it and will continue to be upset,” Taylor said. “Hopefully, hopefully, someone has a camera on their house, on their door or someone saw something so we can begin the process of trying to get the information out to the community so we can try to put this thing together and find these people. We’re hoping, we’re praying.”

Porfirio Espinoza Cardoza, of the 4600 block of West Schubert Avenue in Kelvin Park, was fatally beaten “inside a residence” in the same block where she had lived, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Chicago police.

“At a moment of great disruption when I think all of us are worried about some trend lines out there to the degree to which people’s fears and in some cases and legitimate concerns about globalization and technology and migration and social media, all of these things are converging,” he said. “What we’ve seen is that there’s one possibility in which we work through that and come out on the other side more unified, more inclusive, more just, more environmentally sustainable in terms of how we organize our economy and our society, and there’s another path in which we become more divided, more tribal.”
