While at least 15,000 people shopped in Oakbrook Center mall two days before Christmas, three men got into an argument near the Auntie Anne’s pretzel shop and two of them fired a dozen shots, injuring four bystanders and sending shoppers fleeing, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Just after midnight Dec. 2, Buffalo Grove police officials said a caller they identified as Brian Howard, 25, phoned 911 and said there was a man near Boxwood Lane and Radcliffe Road, in the village, with a pair of guns. After inquiring further, Howard told dispatch that the man was him, officials said.
“We expect that classrooms, and sometimes schools, will be transitioned to remote learning, as we identify and manage the positive cases among staff and students. But we are confident that we can manage those decisions in an agile and responsive way,” CPS said in its statement.
“Talking about the rise in cases, where they are coming from, concerns about 18-29 cohort and if ready by then, some of our new strategies to reach this group,” Lightfoot said. “We are toying with a mandatory mask order for Chicago. I will also say that we will not hesitate to shut down or fine businesses for non-compliance.”

But what’s unusual about the surge is what’s happening in Chicago in particular, and how people in the city are getting infected with the virus at higher rate than anywhere else in Illinois. According to the data as of Christmas Day, the rate of COVID-19 infection in Chicago was 1,323.3 per 100,000 people, with the second highest rate being suburban Cook County with 1,175.5 per 100,000 people and the Will-Kankakee County region ranking third with 1,056.2 per 100,000.
