CTU has about 25,000 members. It’s unclear how many of these educators align with Members First, but about 5,600 people belong to the caucus’ Facebook group. The Members First slate includes vice president candidate Sandi Hoggatt, a case manager at Kenwood Academy High School; recording secretary candidate María Soto, a clerk at George Washington High School; and financial secretary candidate Philip Weiss, a social worker at Rickover Naval Academy.

The fire first was reported around 1:55 a.m. at 8215 S. Cornell Ave. on the Far South Side, according to information from the police and fire departments. Paramedics took the woman in critical condition to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m., according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which had not released information about the woman’s identity Tuesday morning.

“Evictions are profoundly destabilizing not just for families that are directly impacted — affecting their ability to work, go to school, and find new housing for years to come — but for entire communities,” Daniel Hertz, policy director for Chicago’s Department of Housing, said in the email. “Eviction is also profoundly racialized, in particular affecting majority-Black communities at far higher rates than majority-white communities. If housing is a human right, then so is due process for being removed from your home, and due process requires a right to representation.”
