The first crash occurred about 5:20 a.m. southbound on the Tri-State (Interstate 294) near 115th Street in Alsip, a southwest suburbs, police said. A yellow International tollway maintenance truck was traveling on the right shoulder with its emergency lights on when for unknown reasons a 2013 gray Ford Escape crashed into the rear end of the truck.
In North Carolina, at least five school systems announced Thursday that they would shift to remote learning as the gasoline supply crisis continued. Among them: Durham, Franklin, Vance and Wake counties, which canceled in-person learning for Friday. The email sent to parents in the Wake County system, the largest in North Carolina, cites “the impact of the gas shortage on staffing availability and student transportation.”
About 12:30 a.m., the 14-year-old was standing outside in the 800 block of West 61st Street when multiple bullets pierced her abdomen, Chicago police said. She was brought to Holy Cross Hospital in fair condition and was set to be transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital as of 1:40 a.m.
The fire department responded about 3 p.m. to the kitchen fire in the unit in the 6500 block of South Lowe Avenue, Chicago Fire Department Larry Langford said. The fire was just contained to one unit because the structure is concrete, and the person inside made it out before the first responders arrived. The fire was put out within 15 minutes, but during that time, a cat had to make a life-or-death decision.
As the U.S. moves closer to reopening seemingly every day, it looks like a big step forward will come in mid-summer, when the Lollapalooza Festival will return to Chicago with a four-day event at its usual place and date range — Grant Park, July 29-August 1 — sources tell Variety. The city of Chicago gave the event the greenlight at near-to or -full-capacity, insiders report, and an official announcement, likely with headliners, is expected to come next week.
