In another fatal shooting, shortly before 9 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old woman was killed while she was a passenger of a vehicle in the Gage Park neighborhood in the 4700 block of South Rockwell Street. The woman was with her boyfriend when someone approached on foot and yelled gang slogans before opening fire. She was struck in the neck and left hand, and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.
“I know you’ve got Pito (José Abreu) coming up next, but you definitely want to get them any way you can, especially in extra innings,” Mendick said. “They’re going to start with a runner on second too. When it went up, (third-base coach) Super Joe (McEwing) was like, ‘You’re going.’ That’s what I was figuring regardless, and then great that the throw was a little bit up the line and I got in there.”
“But hopefully the CBA will get resolved, as it has been in the past,” he said. “It’ s definitely a variable, but it’s hard to handicap what it all means. “One of the hardest things in baseball is coming off the bench,” Mendick said. “The guys that do that super well are just unbelievable because being in that position, I understand how hard it is. So yeah, to get some rhythm, to get some at-bats under my belt, that’s kind of what you want to do. I want to get out there and take advantage of the opportunity.”
In addition to the June 1, 2020, incident at the Egg Harbor Cafe at 175 W. Jackson St., Vargas also admitted in the plea that earlier the same night he used a baseball bat to strike an Aurora bank’s ATM and attempted to pry it open with a metal street sign pole, the release said.
