Rafael Ortega led off the inning with a line drive that got past right fielder Bryan De La Cruz and landed under the fence. Ortega reached third, but the Marlins appealed on a stadium boundary call, turning the ruling to a ground-rule double. Schwindel’s grounder advanced Ortega to third before Wisdom’s opposite-field single to right.
There was also a low snap that skidded into Fields’ shoe tops and was recovered for a 2-yard loss by Khalil Herbert. Plus, on a third-and-12 late in the second quarter, when Fields tried to improvise and make something happen, he did exactly what he promised earlier in the month he would try his darnedest to avoid. He ran into traffic, didn’t get out of bounds or slide and instead tried twirling past Miami Dolphins cornerback Nik Needham. It didn’t work.
The Bears prepared for training camp with the idea that second-round pick Teven Jenkins, whom they traded up to select, would win the job. Just about everyone but Jenkins has lined up at the position. Four players — Elijah Wilkinson, Borom, Alex Bars and Arlington Hambright — have taken reps with the first team, and Wilkinson was there for the bulk of the preseason opener.
“All three quarterbacks distinguished themselves in the spring and preseason camp,” Kelly said. “Clearly, each has the skills necessary to lead, but Jack proved to be more consistent, and therefore going into our opener, gives us the best chance for success.”
“Obviously, we’re playing short-handed, and I think that’s very clear — we’re not going to be playing short-handed going forward,” Hoyer said Thursday. “ … For the next couple months, we’re going to have to play short-handed and give a lot of opportunities, and my guess is that we’ll find some interesting things over the next two months. But those will be probably individual one-off things that we can use going forward, and it’s exciting to be able to let these guys have opportunities to play and to prove that.”
“Yes, we absolutely have challenges in the city; there’s no question about it,” Lightfoot told reporters ahead of the event. “We can’t lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of the people in the city, the vast majority of folks who live on the South Side, love their city, love their neighborhood, love their block, and just want to be able to live in a peaceful, vibrant environment. And that’s what Bud Billiken completely exemplifies.”
The Bears offense was playing without wide receivers Allen Robinson and Marquise Goodwin, and running back David Montgomery had one carry before leaving the game. Fields was throwing to mostly second stringers rather than Darnell Mooney, Jimmy Graham and Cole Kmet, though he did play several of his series behind the starting offensive line. Such absences didn’t help Fields early.
