McNeal was at a gas station with friends, pumping gas, when they saw another group of people around a nearby McDonalds, Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said Thursday. The two groups stared at each other, and when McNeal’s group tried to flee in a car, a member of the other group opened fire, he said.
Jenny Thornley, 41, a political activist whose campaign work has included Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s 2018 run for governor, is accused in an indictment issued Wednesday of stealing between $10,000 and $100,000 by allegedly forging documents purportedly signed by Jack Garcia, the merit board’s executive director.

Attorneys for the families of two brothers, Inmer Rivera Tejada, 39, and Rafael Rivera Tejada, 36, and their nephew Guillermo Rivera Tejada, 26, who died in an explosion along a bank of the Illinois River next to Starved Rock State Park on May 6, 2021, filed three wrongful death lawsuits against construction companies. The complaint claims that the companies left behind an explosive rod from a bridge demolition that occurred earlier in the year. The men found the rod and used it to prop up a cast iron pan, which the complaint says exploded after being heated by their campfire. Authorities responded to the apartment and found a man unresponsive on the living room floor. The man, later identified as Ben Sims, 36, by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, had been shot in the chest. Sims, who was a resident of the home, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the break-in.
