Care of all cut Christmas trees is generally the same, regardless of the species. Selecting a fresh tree is the most important, as a dry tree will not take up water and will quickly become a fire hazard. Store it in a bucket of water in a cool, 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, wind-free and sun-free area, such as an unheated garage, until you place it inside. Right before you bring the tree indoors, make a slightly angled cut, approximately 2 inches from the base of the trunk. It is OK to cut more if you need to shorten the tree.

Pearl High won several segregated Tennessee state championships and was a four-time champion of the National High School Basketball Tournament for Black schools that was played in Nashville from 1945-1964.
Looking beyond this holiday season, the North Michigan Avenue district is taking steps to improve safety and reduce crime in the new year by forming a special service area, which will assess additional property taxes effective Jan. 1, pending City Council approval. The new taxing district would raise an additional $742,033 annually, with $472,194 dedicated to “public health and safety programs.”
“Dr. Arwady and Mayor (Lori) Lightfoot, you have enough information to deny the permit,” Amalia NietoGomez, executive director of the Alliance of the SouthEast, said at the conference a week ago. “The community has been loud, and we want you to deny the permit. Southeast Side residents have suffered enough.”
Last week, City Council Rules Committee consultant Anne Schaeffer mentioned in a presentation to aldermen that her analysis showed the population of the Latino Caucus’ redrawn 11th Ward, including Chinatown, fell just short of being more than 50% Asian. Supporters of that version countered their 11th Ward in fact does include an Asian majority.
Killed in the shooting was Carl Dennison, 17, of Skokie. Four other teens were shot, including a 14-year-old girl who is still in critical condition and a 17-year-old boy who remains hospitalized, police said. The teens all knew each other, and two were in a car and three others were standing nearby when the shooting occurred, police said.
“We are not seeing, in any way, cases in schools at rates any different than we would expect them to be, based on what we’re seeing in the community. So when you see the rates in the community go up, you’ll see rates in schools go up. When you see rates in the community go down, you’ll see rates in schools go down,” Arwady said.
