Two people and a dog are dead after a domestic-related shooting Saturday night in northwest suburban Arlington Heights, according to police.

In a news release, Arlington Heights Police Department officials said officers responded to a home in the 300 block of West Campbell Street at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday after a man called 9-1-1 saying he killed his wife and dog and that he was going to kill himself.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has identified the woman as Cynthia Armstrong, 74, and the man as Ronald Armstrong, 76.

According to the release, officers made multiple attempts to gain entry into the single-family home Police said after multiple officers heard a “clear and distinctive sound” inside the house, they pushed inside to investigate what they believed to be a single gunshot. Once inside, police said they found an unresponsive woman seated at a dining table.

An unresponsive, but breathing, man was found in an adjoining room, police said in the release. Officers removed a handgun from the man, and said they found no additional people inside the home. Police said they found the family dog dead.

Arlington Heights Fire Department paramedics transported the man to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where he died Sunday afternoon. The woman had been pronounced dead at the home, police said in the release.

Police said evidence suggests the shooting was a domestic violence incident and that there is no public safety risk.
