National Weather Service officials say there’s a chance of torrential rain and flooding late Sunday evening and overnight in the far south Chicago metro area to central Illinois.
They said areas that experienced several inches of rain on Saturday from central Illinois into northwest Indiana might experience flooding again. Torrential rainfall can flood roads, fields, basements and cause rapid stream rises, the weather service said. They recommend that people avoid flooded paths and roadways.
Officials also warned that a few strong to severe thunderstorms with gusty winds and heavy rain are possible into central and east-central Illinois this evening into early next morning. Locally heavy rain is possible tonight for areas around and south of the I-80 corridor.
The weather service recommends that people move indoors if they hear thunder, and use caution when driving in heavy rain.
The weather service also reported dangerous swimming conditions at Lake Michigan in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana through this evening. They warned of high waves of 3 to 7 feet, hazardous boating conditions and life-threatening currents.
They recommend staying out of the water and avoiding piers and lakeshore trails in affected areas.
Current conditions at Chicago’s airports are overcast at 69 degrees.
