A Chicago teen has made history at his high school by earning a perfect score on the ACT test.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, 16-year-old Mario Hoover has become the first student to get a perfect ACT score at Providence-St. Mel High School. Hoover earned a score of 36, which is only achieved by less than 1 percent of ACT test-takers.
The high school junior has a 3.9 GPA and is taking four AP classes. Outside of class, Hoover is involved in athletics, the school’s choir and debate club, and volunteers at a local hospital and the Boys and Girls Club.
In preparation for the ACT test, Hoover enrolled in prep courses and took practice exams. Principal Timothy Ervin applauded the high school junior on his history-making achievement.
“He is the future of Black history, in the sense that he has made history here in the present and that’s going to live on forever,” Ervin told Fox 32 Chicago.
Hoover said his goal is to inspire other students to challenge themselves in and outside of school.
“Doing the best that I can to boost my academic career and professional career to inspire others to do the same,” Hoover told ABC 7 Chicago. “Because once you have that platform, you can inspire people to change the world and you can also change the world.”
The 16-year-old plans to attend Columbia University, majoring in neuroscience and minoring in music.
