State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, a Democrat from Chicago, has been appointed as an assistant majority leader in the House Democratic Caucus. The nomination is in recognition of her extensive experience and effective leadership in addressing family-related matters, particularly in health and human services.

“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve in a leadership role in the Illinois General Assembly,” Lilly said. “I truly appreciate the support from Speaker Welch, the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus and all of the colleagues in our House Democratic Caucus who work hard every day to build a stronger Illinois for every single individual in our state. There’s a number of challenges ahead of us, and I look forward to getting to work right away in this new capacity.”

“I’m incredibly proud to have Rep. Lilly join my leadership team,” said Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch. “For more than a decade, she has been a consistent champion for Chicago’s Greater West Side and she has quickly grown into her role as the Human Services Appropriations Chair. She’s steadfast in her commitment to ensuring Illinois remains a compassionate state for all and I am proud to have such a strong voice fighting alongside me in Springfield.”

Having been a dedicated member of the General Assembly since 2010, Lilly’s appointment further acknowledges her significant contributions. Serving as the chairperson of the House Appropriations-Health and Human Services Committee, she has played an active role in shaping the budgetary decisions concerning vital social services and essential care that are crucial for families. This past session, she spearheaded the following proposals:

  • Updated the state’s Smoke Free Illinois Act to include electronic cigarettes (House Bill 1540);
  • Ensured schools are prepared for emergencies with trauma kits (House Bill 1561);
  • Secured additional mental health resources for underserved communities (House Bill 3698);
  • Connected parents behind on child support with work opportunities (House Bill 3699);
  • Ensured emergency room patients properly receive care before paperwork (House Bill 3955);
  • Encouraged more diverse participation in clinical trials (Senate Bill 1774).
