A 50-year-old woman held in DuPage County Jail was pronounced dead Monday after being found unresponsive inside her cell, officials said.
About 9:35 a.m., the woman, identified as Reneyda Aguillar-Hurtado, was found unconscious by a sheriff’s deputy doing rounds at the jail in Wheaton. Staff administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took her to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where she never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead, according to a DuPage County sheriff’s news release.
There were no signs of physical trauma, and the cause of death was pending autopsy results, the release said.
“This is an extremely unfortunate event,” Sheriff James Mendrick stated. “We take all the necessary safeguards to protect our detainees, and our preliminary investigation indicates all the proper procedures were followed.”
An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday morning.
