A 14-year-old boy was fatally wounded and four others were shot Thursday night in the Fuller Park neighborhood where officers opened fire when a gunman began shooting in their direction, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., a group pulled out firearms in the 4200 block of South Wells Street and opened fire at another group. Officers responding to ShotSpotter technology came to the scene where they found multiple people lying on the ground wounded and a male armed with a handgun, police said.

Police said the gunman then opened fire toward officers and the officers returned fire. The gunman fled the scene but was taken into custody a short time later when it was discovered he had a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

It was not clear how the alleged gunman suffered the wound.

Officers at the scene began giving aid to the gunshot victims. Five people were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. One of the victims, a 14-year-old boy, was pronounced dead. An 18-year-old man and another man, 19, were listed in critical condition with wounds to the back and chest. A 16-year-old boy suffered a leg wound and was listed in good condition. A 21-year-old woman was shot in the hand, police said.

The shooting was being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. All officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
