The Kane County coroner Friday afternoon identified an Aurora man as the person killed in a shootout with police on the border of Geneva and Batavia on Wednesday.

James Moriarty, 38, was identified by the coroner as the man killed in the incident.

Moriarty was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva following the shooting Wednesday. An autopsy was performed Friday and the preliminary cause of death was ruled as multiple gunshot wounds, Kane County Coroner’s officials said.

Moriarty allegedly carjacked a Honda Accord at a Jiffy Lube in Aurora around 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, Kane County Sheriff’s officials said. Deputies later spotted the vehicle using license plate readers in the South Elgin area, police said.

Police initiated a pursuit that ended at Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway on the border of Geneva and Batavia, where the vehicle was stopped by sheriff’s deputies.

At that point, the man allegedly exited the vehicle and displayed a weapon toward deputies, officials said.

A police dog, named Hudson, was deployed and became involved in an active struggle with the man. An exchange of gunfire occurred, officials said, during which the man and the police dog were shot.

Both Moriarty and the police dog died during the shootout.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation into the incident and asks anyone who witnessed the shooting to call the tip line at 331-385-6314.
