Beaubien Woods is home to a mix of prairie, woodland and wetland habitats with Flatfoot Lake as the centerpiece. Visitors can hike the trails to look for birds and wildflowers, play and picnic in open grassy areas, and fish from a barrier-free pier for channel catfish and bluegill-sunfish hybrids.

Want to help this natural space thrive? Join a volunteer opportunity happening this spring with the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

W Doty Ave S, southeast of E 130th St & S Ellis Ave Chicago, IL 60827

  • May 6, 11am-1pm
  • May 18, 10am-1pm

Enjoy fresh air and exercise while improving the health of our local prairies and woodlands. You can help make a difference for nature while learning from experienced leaders. Stewardship days may include removing invasive plants, collecting native seeds, and nature walks to enjoy the preserve.

Registration is required to receive meet-up location. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. For more information and to register, visit fpdcc.com/volunteer.

Chicago River Day

  • May 13, 9am-12pm

Join the Friends of the Chicago River for a fun, family-friendly cleanup on Chicago River Day. The Chicago-Calumet River system is healthier now than it has been in 150 years, but litter continues to be a problem, hurting people and wildlife and diminishing the beauty of our region. Registration required. Sign up before May 5 to receive a free T-shirt: https://bit.ly/3LncU9b.
