Princess Sarah Jane Culberson is an American philanthropist, public speaker, educator, writer and actress.
By birth she is a Mende princess of Bumpe–Gao Chiefdom in Sierra Leone. She is the co-founder of Sierra Leone Rising, a non-profit organization that raises funds to improve education, economic opportunities, and sustainable living for people in Sierra Leone. The organization also distributed aid during the COVID-19 crises and the Ebola outbreak. On Wednesday, April 5th at 11:00 a.m. Princess Sarah will speak to the students of Rich Township High School District 227 (RTHS) at the Fine Arts and Communications Campus Auditorium in Richton Park, in Chicago’s South suburbs.
Princess Sarah has an extraordinary journey that has been featured on CNN, Good Morning America, BBC and numerous other media outlets. Her story inspired her book, “A Princess Found: An American Family, an African Chiefdom, and the Daughter Who Connected Them All,” which is being turned into a live action movie with Disney.
Princess Sarah’s diverse background and experience in education over the past 15 years has led her to present and create curriculum for schools, universities and corporations. She was born to an African father and White mother and one year after her birth she was adopted by a White, West Virginian couple and raised in the United States with little knowledge of her ancestry. Among the awards and honors she has received include the Impact Award at the 30th Annual Trumpet Awards in 2022.
