National Weather Service officials are expecting severe thunderstorms ahead of a cold front which may develop into tornadoes Friday in some areas.
Officials warned of a ‘robust’ early spring storm set to track across the Midwest and into the Great Lakes region Friday, and as time passes officials believe the system will create severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Officials said in a weather statement Thursday, an all hazards severe threat exist, including tornadoes.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was issued Thursday morning for portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana. Thunderstorms with possible hail was expected but severe. weather was not. However, officials said as the storm system moves, hazards are expected to increase with the greatest threat across eastern Iowa into northwest Illinois, officials said.
Officials urged people in the affected areas to stay up to date with the weather forecast. Officials said a period of strong winds in excess of 50 mph was likely Friday morning into Saturday night, with the strongest winds expected south of I-80.
Current conditions at Midway Airport was mostly cloudy at 38 degrees, and at O’Hare International Airport conditions were the same at 37 degrees.
