Will Javonte Green return to the Chicago Bulls this season? ‘He’d go out there and try to play on one leg if he could.’

Javonte Green is still not close to playing for the Chicago Bulls — and is now running out of time to make a full return before the end of the season.

The forward underwent an arthroscopic debridement on Jan. 11 nearly two months after suffering a bone bruise that forced him in and out of the lineup for weeks.

Coach Billy Donovan said Green has been “introduced to some running,” but is not back to sprinting at full speed.

“I would say a couple of weeks away certainly before he can get back on the court in terms of the contact,” Donovan said after Wednesday’s practice at the Advocate Center.

Donovan added that Green could require “a couple more weeks” once he is cleared for contact practice before he is cleared to play in a game.

The Bulls have maintained Green’s recovery process has been “on schedule” since the January procedure, but the team’s secondary rotation has struggled as the forward’s absence drags out.

Green is a high-energy player who often sacrifices his body to make critical plays on defense — a trait the Bulls admire, but also need to protect.

“I know the kind of guy he is — he’d go out there and try to play on one leg if he could,” Donovan said. “He’s got to be smart.”

There are just under seven weeks left in the regular season. If Green needs two weeks to return to contact and two more weeks more to be cleared for game play, he could be available for 10 games or less to close the season before the playoffs or play-in tournament.

However, Donovan said the Bulls have yet to undergo discussions of whether to shut down Green — and those discussions might be unlikely to happen at all.

“Whenever he can come back, no matter how many games are left, we’ll welcome him back with open arms just because of what he brings to the table,” Donovan said.

“It’s not like he’s missing out on anything. He’s around practice every single day, so he is up to speed on those things. Whenever he can come back and does come back, whatever time is left, that would be fine and we would try to maximize him as much as we could.”
