The University of Virginia has canceled its home football game Saturday against Coastal Carolina, the school announced Wednesday morning.

“The decision was made following the shooting of five students on Grounds Sunday night,” UVA said in a release. “The incident resulted in the deaths of three members of the UVA team – Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.”

The game would have been Virginia’s final home game of the 2022 season.

UVA has not made a decision on whether the team will play its scheduled season finale Nov. 26 at Virginia Tech.

“A decision if Virginia will participate in its final game of the season, a Nov. 26 (Saturday) date against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, has not been made at this time,” the release said.

Virginia coach Tony Elliott and athletic director Carla Williams spoke publicy Tuesday for the first time since authorities said Chandler, Davis and D’Sean Perry were killed by a fellow student after returning to campus from a class trip Sunday night.

“We’ll make [the decision] together,” Williams said Tuesday. “It’ll be a discussion with Coach and the team. Obviously, they’re going through a lot. We’ll make a decision soon.”

Police arrested Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 22, a UVA student and former walk-on for the Cavaliers’ football team, and charged him in the shooting.

“Our program is heartbroken for the University of Virginia, the victims’ families, loved ones, friends, and the entire community of Charlottesville,” Coastal Carolina football coach Jamey Chadwell said in a release. “While our football team was looking forward to competing against the University of Virginia, we support their decision not to play. Our program will continue to uplift their program, University, and community in our prayers as they continue to navigate this difficult time. We all stand in solidarity with UVA.”

This is a developing story.
