A 3-year-old Beach Park boy died Monday when a family member accidentally backed over him with a car, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.

The accident took place around noon in the 12700 block of West Beach Road.

According to police, it appears that a female family member of the boy was moving a car in a driveway in order to make room so children could play basketball.

As the woman backed up, the child rode a bicycle behind the car and was run over. The woman felt the force of the strike, stopped and got out, discovering the child, police said.

Paramedics responded and transported the boy to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan with what police said were extremely critical injuries. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
