A Cook County judge was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and appeared in court Wednesday, according to court records.

About 10:15 p.m. Tuesday a 57-year-old woman told police that Judge Carl Boyd, 57, threw a bottle at a glass door window, causing the window to break in the 10700 block of South Seeley Avenue, Chicago police said. Police reported that a woman there suffered a large cut to the left side of her face from the glass.

Boyd was given a personal recognizance bond and ordered to stay away from his home for a week, according to court officials.

His next court date is Sept. 28, said Mary Wisniewski, spokeswoman for the office of Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans. Wisniewski confirmed that Boyd is a judge for the Cook County Circuit Court, but said the office would not provide additional comment on the case because it is pending.

An attorney for Boyd could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

The chief judge’s office has asked the Illinois Supreme Court to transfer Boyd’s case to someone who is not a Cook County judge “to avoid even the appearance of impropriety,” Wisniewski said.

An executive committee of presiding judges was scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon to determine if there needed to be a change in Boyd’s assignment.

According to the chief judge’s website, Boyd is assigned to the Markham courthouse.
