The Gary Community School Corporation Athletics Department recently released its 2022 – 2023 Fall sports schedule. The highly anticipated football season kicks off on August 12, 2022, at West Side Leadership Academy at 5:00 P.M. with a scrimmage game against Valparaiso High School. The entire community is invited to support the football team under the leadership of the newly appointed head football coach and West Side alumni, Alger Boswell III.

“Our student athletes have worked hard all summer, and we look forward to a solid season,” said Boswell. “We are especially excited to see our players an opportunity to showcase their talents on the new turf and in a renovated stadium. They deserve all of these amenities.”

The renovated turf is the latest addition to the Cougar Stadium that has been undergoing enhancements over the last year. The school district has dedicated considerable resources to improvements of the facilities including the new track, tennis courts and jumbotrons with additional projects still in the works. The funding was available thanks to the community’s support of the referendum.

“The stadium renovation is a tangible example of the referendum dollars at work,” said GCSC Manager Dr. Paige McNulty. “We indicated that funding would support facility improvements and extracurricular activities, and that’s just what has manifested. We are indeed a school community working together.”

A ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the football stadium is scheduled to take place on August 12th prior to the scrimmage.  More details will be posted at Garyschools.org and social media closer to gameday.

“All of our athletes are required to meet academic guidelines in order to compete,” said Athletic Director Robert Lee. “They are committed to staying eligible, and we ask as a District that the community comes out and fills the stands for all of our sporting competitions. Our youth need and deserve our support.”

The schedules for football, volleyball and cross-country track are available on the website at garyschools.org/athletics.
